Horrible histories - Tudors - Henry the VIII

The Tudors research
In the Tudor period poppy seeds were mixed with eggs, alum (along with mineral and borax) to make
the skin white paint for the skin. Lead ore, mercury, egg whites, pestle, motar, cinnabar and vermilion
were also used to make makeup in the for various products.
Talc and fig juice were used by grinding them with a mortar and postal. Bright red cinnabar was used as
blusher. Elizabeth I used these items and the ladies at the court copied her.
Cosmetics were not popular during the early part of the Tudor period however, perfumes and lotions
were. Skin softening products were created using sesame seed oil, beeswax and honey. These
ingredients are still used in products similar today. (DK finds)

Tudor makeup was also a way ladies could show off their wealth if you had a pale face it would show

you did not need to work in the fields doing hard labor to live. As shown in portraits of wealthy people of this time such as Henry VIII's wives. In this portrait of Anne Boleyn, it shows her face to be very pale with very little colour besides a small amount of blush. As Anne was wealthy she would not need to work
so she would add white to exaggerate this fact.

Portraits are a very good way of finding out what the makeup was really like in the Tudor period. As
photographs hadn't been invented they are a good way to grasp what the makeup was intended to look
like at this time. (BBC)

During the crusades, cosmetic products were brought back to Europe for the wealthy to use. This was when Henry VIII reigned. (The fundamentals of makeup). He also used cosmetic's to make his face pale. This may be another reason why it was popular because royalty at the time were doing it. Face products such as mascara, eyeshadow and eyebrow products can also be seen in the portraits. Face foundation was not popular at the time it was all about the eyes. (The fundamentals of makeup).
Ceruse was the main ingredient in the white face paint. This was a mixture of white lead and vinegar.
This made it very toxic to the body and many people of this time period died young from lead poisoning.
( The fundamentals of makeup).

The fashion at the time for eyebrows was to have them in a natural-looking arch. They would pluck them
to fit in with this trend and they would also use makeup to define the arch shape more.

Horrible history
Horrible history is a British comedy sketch television series. This show was produced for CBBC by Lion Television with Citrus Television and ran from 2009 to 2013 for five series of thirteen half-hour episodes.
The tv show carries over the graphic style and much of the content of horrible History book series. It used aspects of British and other western world histories, spanning from the stone age to the post-world war 2 era to create comical sketches.
The creative team was largely recruited from the mainstream adult UK comedy scene. They took inspiration from such quintessentially British historical classics as Blackadder and the Monty Python films. It has won numerous domestic and international awards and has been named among the greatest Brtish children's television series of all time.

Henry VIII
Henry Tudor (June 28, 1491, to January 28, 1547) was the king of England from 1509 until his death in 1547. The son of Henry VII of England and Elizabeth York, Henry became king of England following the death of his father. In 1534 Henry said that he, not the Pope, was the Head of the Church in England. Although Henry remained a Catholic to the end of his life, this was the beginning of the Church of England. In 1536 Henry used his new power to begin to close down the monasteries and take their land and money. This made many people unhappy, and there was a rebellion, called the Pilgrimage of Grace in 1536. Henry put it down brutally.
henry is most known for having 8 wives in his life. As some of them he had killed and falsely accused just because they did not give him a son.

Makeup plan

  1. First of all, I will prepare the crepe hair by straightening it with straighteners and pulling it into smaller pieces.
  2. Apply bald cap to the head using spirit gum and pros-aid. Making sure to cut it to fit the head correctly with no wrinkles.
  3. I will then apply them to the face either using pros-aide or spirit gum. Making sure the chin is very full and heavy to make the model look fatter.
  4. Apply crepe to the top of the head.
  5. I will apply foundation onto the face using a new, clean sponge.
  6. Next, I will apply a small amount of contour the face to make the model look larger.
  7. I will then colour in the eyebrows using orange grease paint and a spooly to comb the colour though.
  8. Add a small amount of blush to the cheeks to bring some color back to the face.

Review
Firstly I added the bald cap to the head using pros-aid. I started using spirit gum however the cap was slightly small for the head, therefore, I applied pros-aid as I feel it is better for the model over hair as it doesn't pull as many out when removing.  I feel the bald cap went really well as I moved the models head when applying. I think this helped make sure there were no un-necessary wrinkles in the cap which people could point out for it to look fake. Next time I use a bald cap I would use the same method. However, I would make sure the cap is large enough for the model when in the process of making it.

I then added pieces of crepe hair that I had prepared earlier. I added small pieces in a way to build the thickness and shape. I also added some pieces just below the hat I had created. I made sure to only add a small amount as Henry would have been baulding at this point and I wanted to show that in my work. Next time doing this i would maybe add a smaller amount the show the baulding better and also in the beard. Making the beard a small bit thinner and not as thick.

I then added foundation to the full face making it paler than normal as this was a popular trend in the Tudor times as it showed they didn't work in the fields because they were wealthy. I then added the powder to the face as this is for film and Tv so it should not refelct of the camera lighting. I then added a small amount of blush to the face to bring some colour back to the cheeks and I had applied foundation over it. I like that I did this as I feel it brings the character to life more and I would use this technique again when re-ding this makeup.

Lastly, I added some ornage grease paint the eyebrows to make them blend in with the charcter as my model haad quite dark brown eyebrows which would not match. I used a clean, new mascara wan to apply this to the eyebrows as it gave the effect the colour was already in the eyebrow hair and made it look natural. I was going to use left over crepe hair for this however I thought it may be too much crepe hair on the face and I wanted the face shape to be visible. Next time doing this makeup I would use the same technique as it worked so well and natural which is perfect for film and TV.
